FORWARD OPERATING BASE DELARAM II, Afghanistan – Marines with Regimental Combat Team 2 instructed a group of Afghan National Army soldiers with the 2nd Brigade, 215th Corps in a basic motorcycle training course here, Dec. 28.

Using bikes provided by the ANA, the Marines started the training course as a basic motorcycle safety course for Marines and sailors.

The course turned into a training lesson for both experienced and inexperienced riders. Just like the Marines and sailors, many of the ANA who took the course had never ridden a motorcycle before.

The first day of riding included classes on how to start and prep the engine, and drills were conducted to train the ANA soldiers on stability and control of the bike.

The drills also included a variety of U-turn and weave drills that helped the students built confidence in their ability to maneuver their motorcycles.

Some of the instructors of the course were also students at one time.

“I went through the course myself and I learned a lot from it,” said Cpl. John Hvizdak, a special intelligence communicator and course instructor, with RCT-2. “I really enjoyed it, which is why I decided to come out here and assist in instructing.”

Since the course began, approximately 90 Marines, sailors and Afghan soldiers have completed the course.

“The ANA picked up riding about as quick as the Marines and sailors,” said Hvizdak. “The important thing is they’re learning, which is what really matters at the end of the day.”

The bikes were lent to the Marines by the ANA to conduct the training for both the ANA, and Marines and sailors.

“The ANA were kind enough to lend us the bikes so we could help out our Marines,” said Hvizdak. “So for them helping us out, we can help them by giving them some instruction and tips on how to ride.”
The second day of the motorcycle course, the Afghan soldiers worked on practicing with the bike and acceleration drills. The soldiers stayed focused throughout the course and were quick to pick up on the training.

“They seem eager to learn,” said Cpl. Kyle Hussin, a motor transport operator, with RCT-2. “They’ve been really motivated and they’ve done really well these last couple days.”
