KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Taliban logistics officer who reports to the deputy shadow governor for Wardak province, killing several armed insurgents during a joint security operation yesterday.

The targeted insurgent is in direct contact with the Kabul province Taliban leader and the Nerkh District Taliban leader. Recent reporting indicates he was to receive ammunition from an associate to be used for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

The joint security force followed intelligence reports to a compound in Nerkh District of Wardak province where Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully.

While clearing the area, the force received gunfire from armed insurgents and returned fire, killing several insurgents. The force recovered multiple weapons to include a machine gun, AK-47s, grenades, chest racks, blasting caps and ammunition.

While securing the compound, security forces discovered an Afghan child was wounded. A coalition medical technician provided immediate first aid. Coalition forces evacuated the child, escorted by a family member, to a coalition hospital within minutes of being injured. The child would later succumb to the wound received during the engagement.

“Taliban insurgents continue to put the citizens of Afghanistan in harm by hiding in villages where they are not welcome; they open fire on Afghan and coalition forces in populated areas, putting innocent civilians at risk,” said Lt. Col. Patrick Hynes, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. “The quick reaction of the security force to provide medical care for this child demonstrates our empathy for the Afghan people.”
