SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The holidays came early for one 618th Air and Space Operations Center non-commissioned officer, who received a promotion via the Stripes for Exceptional Performers program, Dec. 4.

Then-Staff Sgt. Crystal Moronta, a command post controller assigned to the 618th AOC's Command and Control Directorate, was promoted to the rank of technical sergeant by Brig. Gen. Sam Cox, 618th AOC commander, during the unit's annual holiday party.

Moronta was unaware of the promotion until she was called to the front of the room to receive what she thought was a door prize.

"I was extremely surprised and thanked God over and over in my head,'" said Sergeant Moronta. "I feel very proud that my leadership considered me for the promotion."

The STEP program supplements existing airmen promotion programs and is designed to accommodate unique circumstances that clearly warrant promotion, according to Air Force regulations.

STEP also provides commanders an opportunity to recognize consistently strong performers for their contributions to the Air Force, by making a direct impact on that person's career.

"Technical Sergeant Moronta is an exceptional airman and truly deserving of this promotion," said Chief Master Sgt. Drew Henderson, 618th AOC superintendent. "She truly earned this stripe and I have no doubt she'll continue to do great things as our Air Force's newest technical sergeant."

Moronta was the sole 618th AOC member promoted by the STEP program in 2010. Once a rank is presented under the STEP program, it is effective immediately.

"Sergeant Moronta's professionalism and maturity are obvious, her enthusiasm is contagious, and her leadership effectiveness is highly regarded by everyone she comes in contact with," said Col. Craig Knierim, 618th AOC Command and Control director. "Since arriving at the 618th AOC, Sergeant Moronta hit the ground running and made an immediate impression."

"The most important part about serving to me is being able to make a difference. I like knowing what I do directly impacts protecting my friends and family," said Moronta. "This promotion means more responsibility and opportunities for professional growth. I want to be the best I can be not for myself, but for others that depend on me for guidance and look to me as a leader."
