    Haqqani Network leader captured in Khost overnight

    KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition security forces captured a Haqqani Network leader operating in Shamul district of Khost province during an operation in the province yesterday.

    The targeted individual is known to coordinate and conduct attacks against Afghan National Army and coalition forces.

    The security force followed intelligence tips to a remote compound in Shamul district to search for the targeted individual. Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully before the joint security force cleared and secured the area. Initial questioning at the scene helped identify the targeted individual, who was detained along with several of his associates.

    A separate security force detained several suspected insurgents and discovered improvised explosive device material during an operation targeting a Haqqani senior leader in Sabari district. The targeted individual coordinates suicide attacks in the district as well as IED attacks against coalition forces operating in the area.

    Intelligence reports led the security force to a compound in Now Den of Sabari district to search for the targeted individual. Afghan forces conducted a callout before the joint security force cleared the compound, finding multiple weapons, military uniforms and IED making material. After initial questioning at the scene, the security force detained the suspected insurgents.

    The assault force ensured the safety of the women and children for the duration of the searches, which were conducted without shots fired.
