NORFOLK, Va. - In the spirit of the holiday season, sailors from Commander, U.S. Second Fleet volunteered Nov. 19 to make the holidays a little brighter for several families.
Ten sailors from Second Fleet's First Class Petty Officer Association visited the Armed Services Young Men's Christian Association to organize, store and prepare non-perishable food items for the ASYMCA's "Holiday Assistance Program."
The program gives the local community and military families all the trimmings for a Thanksgiving meal.
"We've had this program for several years now and with each passing year, our numbers have increased significantly," said Jackinah Andrews, Regional Program director, Military Support Media director, ASYMCA in Hampton Roads. "Today kicks off a three-day event where we begin to sort all our canned goods that we've collected for the program."
The Monday before Thanksgiving, the holiday baskets will be packaged and delivered to 640 local families.
Second Fleet's sailors expressed how dedicating their time to help those in need is what drives them to volunteer for such events.
"For us, it's about to giving back to our community," said Petty Officer 1st Class Angelita Tester. "We all know it can be tough around the holidays, so contributing our time to help out those in need gives us a sense of kindness and accomplishment."
Andrews appreciates all the help from Second Fleet and other Hampton Roads military commands who donated their time to the program.
"I'm very excited that Second Fleet sailors and others have been able to lend a hand this year," said Andrews. "Our mission is to service those families in need and we are very grateful to lend a hand."
