MARINE CORPS AIR GROUND COMBAT CENTER TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. – It’s early in the morning and Marines and sailors with Combat Logistics Regiment 1, 1st Marine Logistics Group are awake preparing for the mission assigned to them for the day during Exercise Steel Knight 2010.

Like most training events, Steel Knight had a scenario of hostile intent. The intention of the exercise was for different units to work together to protect a friendly nation of the United States known as Thrace against the nation of Samara’s conventional attacks and continuous threats.

Steel Knight is a 13-day -live-fire exercise involving Combat Logistics Battalions 1 and 7, 1st Tank Battalion, 5th Marines and 11th Marines. The purpose of the exercise is to provide realistic training to help keep the Marines and sailors stay sharp and further prepare them for future deployments.

“I think this is a great way for [CLB-1] to test our Marines and see where their heads are at,” said Sgt David Borders, platoon sergeant, 3rd platoon, Motor Transport Company, CLB-1, CLR-1, 1st MLG. “A lot of us just returned from deployment, but we have some new faces here as well.”

The role of CLB-1 in the exercise was to provide direct logistical support to 3rd Battalion, 11 Marines, 1st Marine Division and 1st Tank Battalion, 1st MarDiv by supplying them with food, water, ammunition and bulk fuel.

CLB-1 conducted various resupply missions and ranges to make sure every Marine and sailor were familiar with the weapon systems that are used frequently on deployment.

“We are training with multiple weapons out here so that if we ever get in a situation in Afghanistan, we could jump on the gun and know exactly what to do to engage the enemy,” said Borders, from San Diego.

In the following months CLB-1 will conduct the Enhanced Mojave Viper course at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, Calif. Enhanced Mojave Viper is similar to Steel Knight, except it is a 30 day training exercise and it will have different scenarios.

“I know it’s repetitious,” said Borders. “The more we practice the [better] we will be able to perform while in Afghanistan.”
