VICKSBURG, Miss. – The 579th Engineer Detachment (FEST-M), a flexible team capable of rapidly deploying into disaster relief operations and military contingencies, launched an official unit website and fan page on Facebook. The website features stories, photos and information regarding the reactivated unit’s functions as it prepares for global support.
“Having the unit on the web is a great opportunity for everyone to learn more about the team,” said Lt. Col. Sam Jaynes, commander, 579th Engineer Detachment (FEST-M). “Our online presence allows the public to get accustomed to our physical presence here in Vicksburg, Miss.”
Along with unit news, visitors to the website will have the opportunity to learn more about the capabilities of the FEST-M, the history of the unit, and the individuals that comprise the team.
“There will be an absolute level of transparency,” continued Jaynes. “The unit may be stationed in Vicksburg, but the information we present on the web will globally apply because of the unique opportunities the FEST-M faces. The FEST-M may be in California battling wildfires one week, and then going over to Iraq in support of overseas contingency operations the next week. Our openness will strengthen our effectiveness to the mission.”
The unit will also manage a Facebook fan page, which will feature most of the information from the official website, but also seek a different channel of communication added Jaynes.
“While the unit presents FEST-M news and information, we want to encourage discussion and feedback on Facebook,” he said. “Users who embrace social media should welcome the idea that they can post comments without hesitation. The FEST-M wants to know what’s on your mind and how we can better facilitate our worldwide efforts. Our mission will be truly defined by those who have a genuine interest in what we are doing.”
