Several insurgents killed during joint patrol

KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Force patrol killed several insurgents and detained several others during an operation to detain a Taliban leader in Nad ‘Ali District, Helmand province, Tuesday.

Multiple intelligence reports and tips from local citizens led the joint security force to the suspected Taliban leader’s compound. The Taliban leader is responsible for the planning, coordination and execution of numerous small arms and improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

After the joint security force secured the perimeter of the compound they used loudspeakers to conduct a series of call-outs allowing the occupants to exit peacefully. Two armed insurgents were killed when they exited the building and threatened the security force.

One suspected insurgent, moving in an aggressive manner towards the security forces, failed to obey numerous voice commands and warning shots from Afghan security forces. The security force deemed the suspected insurgent hostile and killed him.

Four men, eight women and nine children exited peacefully during the operation and were protected.

Several automatic weapons, assorted ammunition and a handgun were found during the operation. They were destroyed prior to the joint security force departing the site.

The men were detained after they tested positive for recently handling explosives and were turned over to Afghan security forces for questioning.
