CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – Thirty-one students from the Afghan National Army’s 215th Corps graduated the up-armored humvee course at the Joint Security Academy Southwest, Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, Oct. 28.
As Afghan national security force training advisors push for more secondary training at JSAS, another group of soldiers graduated from the five-week UAH course designed to give soldiers better driving skills. Driving skills are vital for the soldiers of the 215th Corps in order to conduct operations in Helmand province.
“It is very important to be trained and perfectly understand how to operate a vehicle,” said Brig. Gen. Ghulam Farooq, the deputy commander of the 215th Corps. “Driving is very dangerous if you don’t operate the vehicles properly.”
During the course, students are taken through the basic operating techniques of both the humvee and the light tactical vehicle, both utilized extensively by the ANA.
Students are also taught ways to make vehicles last longer in the field. Keeping the vehicles in good condition can make the vehicles ready at all times.
After learning the basics, students are taught more advanced driving skills that are tailored to the obstacles soldiers will encounter in Helmand province.
Safe driving is a very important part of operating in the rural region. Safety is on the top of the priority list as the ANA progresses into independent operations in the region.
“Today is the second UAH graduation and you will all go back to your units and properly operate your vehicles,” said Col. Mohmmad Aslam, the training officer for the 215th Corps.
