    FORT EUSTIS, VA, UNITED STATES

    7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary)

FORT EUSTIS, Va. - The 7th Sustainment Brigade held its Soldier and Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year board Sept. 28 at the brigade conference room.

The competition was tough but 7th Sustainment Brigade is proud to announce the Soldier of the Year and Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year. Pfc. Frieda Miller, Headquarters Headquarters Company, Special Troops Battalion is the Soldier of the Year for 7th Sustainment Brigade and Sgt. Daniel Troyer, 611th Seaport Operations Company, 6th Transportation Battalion, has been named the Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year for the brigade.

Each of the contestants had to first compete at battalion level quarterly boards and brigade level quarterly boards. The winners of the brigade quarterly boards then participated Sept. 28 brigade annual board.

Each competitor was judged based on personal appearance, self confidence, marksmanship, Army Physical Fitness Test score, and knowledge of subject areas to include current events, unit history, Army safety programs, Army Leadership, and land navigation. Soldiers were also required to sing the Army song and the 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command song and recite the Soldier’s Creed and the Creed of the Non-Commissioned Officer. After being drilled by the president of the board, Command Sgt. Maj. Cedric Thomas, the 7th Sus. Bde. command sergeant major, and his four board members, candidates were also required to give a brief class to the board on a pre-chosen subject.

Miller, a paralegal with the brigade, was the most junior ranking soldier of all her competitors but she gave her all and won Soldier of the Year. She enlisted in the Army in March 2009 and upon completion of her Advanced Individual Training, was named Honor Graduate and Class Values Leader. She was also the only soldier in her class to score a perfect 300 on her Army Physical Fitness Test. In February of 2010, Miller deployed to Haiti in support of Operation Unified Response. During the board, Miller gave a stellar class on suicide prevention using various training tools and class involvement. Through her class, she showed that this is an important issue to her and that she truly cares for her fellow battle buddies.

“We are all a big family and we need to start acting like it and looking out for our brothers and sisters in arms. One suicide is just one too many,” says Miller.

Troyer, a squad leader and fuel supply specialist, dominated the Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year board. His loud booming command voice could be heard through the entire building when reciting the Creed of the Non-Commissioned Officer. Troyer has deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While deployed, he was assigned as dismount to the senior scout’s truck where he served as a designated marksman for the platoon. During his deployment, he helped his platoon find and unearth the largest cache of mortar rounds that had been found to date. He was also involved in the rescue attempts of missing soldiers that were captured. Being a positive leader and an example to his soldiers is one of the things that Troyer holds high on his priority list.

“I strive to show my soldiers what they need to be by example, not just words,” said Troyer. “Soldier resiliency is one of the most important parts of serving in our Army. Having the ability to overcome adversity strengthens not just you but the force as a whole. You only get what you put in.”

Troyer and Miller will next go on to represent the “Resolute” brigade at the 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command Soldier and Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year Board at Fort Knox, Ken., at a date to be determined.
