    Safety is Priority One

KABUL, Afghanistan - On Oct. 10, 2010, The Afghan Air Force, Kabul Air Wing held its second safety day this year at the air force base in Kabul.

Over 250 Afghan and NATO Air Training Command-Afghanistan advisors attended the 3-hour long stand-down. Presentations included: flight, ground, fire safety, and aviation medicine.

The AAF Commander, Major General Mohammad Dawran, and Kabul Air Wing Commander, Brigadier General Mohammad Barat, both spoke of the importance and responsibility all Airmen have to do their job with consideration to safety.

Maj. Gen. Dawran didn’t sugar coat the fact that ground safety, specifically traffic accidents, are the biggest problem for the air force and that these accidents are preventable. The two most common offenses are driving without a license and reckless driving.

Maj. Gen. Dawran praised the Airmen for their recent successes, but cautioned then against becoming complacent. In 2009, the AAF lost three aircraft and had 14 fatalities. This year there has been no loss of life or aircraft. While there were aircraft accidents, all aircraft were repaired.

The Kabul Wing holds four Wing safety days annually. They are adjusting their schedule to two base wide safety days and four flight safety meetings for aircrew annually. Safety is important at to the AAF because Airmen are the most valuable resource of the organization.
