SAN DIEGO - Gary Wang, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command director of Corporate Operations and chief information officer, was awarded a Cybersecurity Award for his exemplary service during the inaugural Cybersecurity Awards held here on Oct. 7, at the Doubletree Hotel.

The award recognizes individuals from both the government and private sector for sustained efforts in taking the initiative to help secure our nation’s cyber-infrastructure, thus enabling the San Diego community to serve as an example of how to live, work and play safely while online.

“I am honored to be selected for this award,” said Wang. “We have a real opportunity to learn from the younger people entering the workforce today, and it was a unique opportunity to be honored alongside people that I can learn from. I encourage everyone to look at this new generation entering the workforce as a group of mentors in the newest technologies and learn from them,” he continued.

Wang was recognized for his team’s “valuable, ongoing efforts” aimed at leading the development of many projects with regional and national significance. His efforts helped make San Diego an international leader in Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance and cybersecurity related technologies, said Reo Carr, editor of the San Diego Business Journal.

Carr said, “The cyber threat has become one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face. America’s competitiveness and economic prosperity depends on effective cybersecurity. Every Internet user has a role to play in securing cyberspace and ensuring the safety of ourselves, our families, and our communities online.”

In 2008, ESET, LLC, a cyber-security company, pioneered Securing Our eCity – a coalition of more than 200 private companies, nonprofits, and government organizations offering education and solutions to help organizations ensure safety and protection from cyber-attacks. eCity is focused on fostering public and private partnerships at local, state, national and international levels and helping to create a cybersecure community.

By helping keep our networks secure, organizations not only keep personal assets and information protected but also help to improve the overall security of cyberspace.

"Securing Our eCity not only focuses on keeping our personal assets and information secure but helps to improve the overall security of cyberspace practices," said Darin Anderson, Chief Operating Officer at ESET, LLC. “Partners come together to raise awareness, offer education and help individuals and businesses prepare for cybersecurity challenges now and in the future."

SSC Pacific's work in cybersecurity helped Naval Base Point Loma earn recognition as an honoree in the critical infrastructure category. SSC Pacific Commanding Officer Capt. Mark Kohlheim and Technical Director Carmela Keeney were in attendance to receive the award.

Team SPAWAR continually strives to build relationships with community and industry partners, including academia, National Defense Industrial Association, Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association, and Securing Our eCity here in San Diego. SPAWAR supports these partners by having employees participate on panels with topics that align with Team SPAWAR’s goals and objectives.

The Securing Our eCity theme is in parallel with this month marking the seventh annual National Cybersecurity Awareness Month sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security. The DHS website provides many resources on how Americans can follow a few simple steps to keep themselves, their businesses, and families’ private information safer online.
