STEWART AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The New York Air National Guard's 105th Airlift Wing has begun working on the interior of the United State Air Force's first C-5M Super Galaxy cargo plane.

The massive aircraft, an upgraded version of the C-5A the 105th Airlift Wing flies, was towed into the inspection stands at Stewart Air National Guard Base early this morning. The 105th's aircraft maintainers are performing an annual inspection that incorporates restoration work to the inspection program.

The aircraft will undergo final reconditioning inside and out by members of the 105th Maintenance Group and other supporting organizations. Work will go on around the clock in order to completely upgrade the aircraft by the first weekend in November.

This Total Force effort consisting of Air Guard, Reserves, Active Duty and contractors will result in interior standardization and a new look for this aircraft and eventually for the entire C-5 fleet.

The C-5M Super Galaxy is the result of a two-phase modernization effort: the Avionics Modernization Program (AMP) and the Reliability Enhancement and Re-engining Program.

The C-5 modernization program provides greatly improved reliability, efficiency, maintainability and availability - reducing total ownership and operating costs of the heavy strategic lift aircraft for the U.S. Air Force - and ensures this critical national strategic airlift resource continues serving the war fighter out to 2040, according to Lockheed Martin, the aircraft manufacturer.

The C-5M Strategic Airlifter, a National Asset, has re-set records for distance, time, speed as well as cargo capacity, improved reliability with reduced fuel consumption.
