Prepping for Fleet Week: Buoy marks the spot for Blue Angels
ALAMEDA, Calif. - The crew from San Pedro-based Coast Guard Cutter George Cobb, a 175-foot buoy tender, dropped the center point buoy for Fleet Week 2010, today.
The buoy acts as a reference point for Blue Angel pilots during the air show scheduled for Oct. 10. It will be recovered at the end of Fleet Week festivities.
The George Cobb is equipped with the latest technology to enable the crew to perform a variety of Coast Guard missions, including: search and rescue, homeland defense, maritime law enforcement, marine environmental protection, and ice breaking. The cutter’s primary mission is to service over two hundred floating aids to navigation along the California coast, including San Diego harbor, San Francisco Bay, and her homeport of San Pedro with the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
Last year's center point buoy was dropped by the Coast Guard Cutter Aspen's crew, homeported in San Francisco. The Aspen's crew has been deployed since June to provide support for the Deepwater Horizon Spill response.
