BISMARCK, N.D. - One of the top leaders of the North Dakota National Guard, Brig. Gen. Patrick Martin, deputy adjutant general and assistant adjutant general for air, was honored at a retirement ceremony today after 36 years of military service.

"Brig. Gen. Martin has done an outstanding job as a key leader within North Dakota's National Guard, and his patriotic service and devotion to duty have defined his distinguished military career," said Gov. John Hoeven. "His leadership and experience have contributed to the growth and success of the National Guard and to the readiness of Guard members to effectively support and serve our communities, state and nation."

Martin became the deputy adjutant general in February 2009, and the assistant adjutant general for air in January 2008.

"Pat Martin has always placed the needs of the airmen and soldiers of the North Dakota National Guard above his own," said Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota adjutant general. "His professionalism and expertise, in so many areas, provided us excellent leadership in the key position as deputy adjutant general. He will be sorely missed."

"Serving with the North Dakota National Guard has been one of the greatest honors of my life," Martin said. "The professional men and women of our Guard make it a tremendous organization to be a part of."

Brig. Gen. Martin is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, Air War College, and Advanced Joint Professional Military Education.

Born, raised and still residing in Pelican Rapids, Minn., he graduated with honors from Pelican Rapids High School in 1973 and from North Dakota State University with honors and a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering in 1983.

Enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1974, he served until 1979 as a Petty Officer Second Class. He joined the North Dakota Air National Guard in 1981 as a Staff Sergeant working on F-4 aircraft avionics systems until receiving his commission in 1985. From 1985 - 1995 he served as a Civil Engineering Officer in the 119th Civil Engineering Squadron where he supervised and coordinated assigned projects for 305-person squadron as well as being responsible for the design and construction programs at the 119th Fighter Wing.

In 1995, he assumed the duties of BioEnvironmental Engineer in the 119th Medical Squadron where he managed all base bioenvironmental engineering programs and coordinated with the Army National Guard, until 1997. In 1997, he assumed the responsibilities of Logistics Management Officer where his primary purpose was to direct and manage division functional areas as well as to be responsible for the effective management of Supply, Contracting, Traffic Management, and Transportation functions for the 119th Fighter Wing.

From 1997 through 1999, he served as the 119th Logistics Squadron Commander, responsible for all functions of a fighter aircraft logistics squadron. In 1999, in order to meet an essential Wing manning need, he once again assumed the duties of the bioenvironmental engineer until he became the Mission Support Group Commander in 2001. In April 2004, he was assigned the position of 119th Fighter Wing Vice Commander. In September 2006, he was assigned to the position of J5 Directorate in Joint Forces Headquarters.
