MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. – Marine Wing Support Group 27 welcomed Sgt. Maj. Michael E. Sprague and bid farewell to Sgt. Maj. Henry A. Prutch II in a relief and appointment ceremony aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, Sept. 24.

The ceremony commenced with the traditional passing of the non-commissioned officer sword from Prutch to Col. Daniel Conley, commanding officer of MWSG-27, to the incoming Sprague. The passing of the sword symbolizes the transition of the unit’s senior enlisted leadership.

Sprague served as the sergeant major of the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training and has high expectations for himself after taking over for Prutch.

“I am thrilled to be here but to be honest there is one thing I am scared of,” Sprague said. “I know Sgt. Maj. Prutch and the type of Marine he is. I have huge shoes to fill and have my work cut out for me.”

Prutch served three years as the MWSG-27 sergeant major, arriving in 2007 and will assume duties as the sergeant major of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing in Afghanistan.

As the ceremony progressed, the sergeant’s major spoke of each other while addressing the audience and Prutch talked about how this ceremony wasn’t the first time they ran into each other.

“I first ran into Sprague when we were in Fallujah as first sergeants,” Prutch said. “It was there where I realized what Sprague is capable of and allows me to say that these Marines here are in good hands.”

Prutch thanked the Marines of MWSG-27 and praised them for the last three years.

“The Marines here have done exactly what I expected of them to do,” Prutch said. “There is no finer force in the world.”

As the ceremony came to an end, the Marines, families and friends congratulated Prutch and Sprague and wished them both good luck.
