SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Senior Airmen Terrance Walton is an aircraft fuel systems journeyman deployed with the 332nd Expeditionary Maintenance Squadron, 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing, at Joint Base Balad, Iraq.

Walton is deployed from Air Mobility Command's 19th Component Maintenance Squadron, 19th Airlift Wing, at Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark., and his hometown is Cuthbert, Ga. The 19th AW provides the Department of Defense with "the largest C-130 fleet in the world," according to the Little Rock AFB Web site. As part of AMC's Global Reach capability, the wing's tasking requirements range from supplying humanitarian airlift relief to victims of disasters, to airdropping supplies and troops into the heart of contingency operations in hostile areas.

At his deployed location supporting Operation New Dawn, Walton maintains aircraft fuel systems in the C-130 Hercules and other aircraft. According to his official Air Force job description, Airman Walton removes, repairs, inspects, installs and modifies aircraft fuel systems including integral fuel tanks, bladder cells and external tanks. He also maintains associated hardware and equipment related to aircraft fuel systems.

Aircraft fuel systems Airmen like Walton advise on aircraft fuel systems removal, repair and installation maintenance procedures and policies, the job description states. They also diagnose fuel system and component malfunctions and recommend corrective actions and resolve problems using technical publications and analytic techniques.

In performing maintenance on aircraft fuel tanks and cells, aircraft fuel systems Airmen removes access panels and depuddle, purge, repair and tests fuel tanks and cells. They perform entry and maintenance in confined spaces and remove, repair and replace malfunctioning components.

Furthermore, the job description shows aircraft fuel systems Airmen like Walton supervise, inspect and evaluate aircraft fuel systems maintenance activities. They clean fuel cells and tanks and inspect for foreign objects, corrosion, cell deterioration and fungus. They also initiate deficiency reports, maintenance analysis documents, technical data changes and equipment records.

To do their job at both home station and while deployed, Aircraft fuel systems Airmen have to maintain mandatory job knowledge in a myriad of areas. They include knowledge of internal hardware such as valves, interconnects, lines, gauges, controls, pumps, and other attachments; sealing materials; sheet metal parts; rubber properties and organic sealing compound applications; layout drawing use; technical publications; concepts and applications of maintenance directives; and work policies and procedures.

According to its base Web site, Joint Base Balad is home to the headquarters of the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing. JB Balad is located approximately 42 miles north of Baghdad in the Sunni Triangle region, which was considered the power base of Saddam Hussein.

The 332nd AEW is composed of nine groups including the 407th, 438th, 447th and 506th Air Expeditionary Groups, located respectively at Ali Base, Al-Asad Air Base, Sather Air Base and Kirkuk Regional Air Base. Of note, the 332nd AEW has been designated by U.S. Central Command as the senior airfield authority at all four of these air bases in addition to Balad.

Joint Base Balad also includes what was formerly Logistics Support Area Anaconda, the largest Army supply center in Iraq. The U.S. Army's 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command is responsible for operating the supply center.
