GRAFENWOEHR, Germany – Delegates from Iraq visited the Grafenwoehr Training Area Sept. 15 to observe Combined Endeavor 2010. The group toured the Joint Multinational Simulation Center, and familiarized themselves with the operating procedures conducted during the large-scale communications exercise that tested computer interoperability.
With more than 40 countries participating and many from Europe, representatives from Iraq and Afghanistan also participated for the first-time to help officials of U.S. Central Command to develop a template for a future Combined Endeavor exercise to be hosted in the Middle East.
Combined Endeavor 2010 is a communication and computer network exercise that brings more than 40 nations and organizations from throughout North America, Europe and the Middle East. Representatives from each nation tests communications and computer network systems to synchronize their technology with those of the other nations, which is useful during military crisis, natural disaster and coalition operations.
“Grafenhwoehr is very beautiful, the compound is well organized,” said Col. Naser Ghadhban Hussein of the Iraqi Army.
The exercise is managed-well, and has excellent equipment, he said. Combined Endeavor is a great way to develop communications for his country.
The Delegates from Iraq toured Combined Endeavor’s training facilities and communicated with representatives from the other nations and organizations.
Combined Endeavor is very important, said Maj. Ghazi Khaleel Ahmed of the Iraqi Army. Iraq needs more participation and involvement with developed countries so it can rise to their level of communication, he said.
Representatives from Iraq and Afghanistan benefit by participating in this event as they move beyond combat operations toward development and capacity building, which is the next step for the nations, said Capt. Jack H. Gaines, EUCOM spokesperson.
“Combined Endeavor 2010 in Europe serves as a dry-run or rehearsal for their-own exercise," said Gaines.
"There's an "endeavor" now in the Pacific, called Pacific Endeavor. There is one in North America that uses South America and Canada to interconnect their network communication systems,” said Gaines. “This exercise that we do here in Grafenwoehr has branched-out world-wide, and every major command is launching their version of it."
