The Deputy Commander of the NATO Training Mission – Iraq (DCOM – Maj. Gen. Claudio Angelelli) discussed issues on the importance of the Senior Non-Commission Officers Course during a recent visit to the SNCO School at the Regional Training Center on Aug. 22.

The NTM-I DCOM conducted a meeting with Iraqi Army Brigadier General Alaa Abdul Kareem, the Infantry NCO School Director, during which they shared their opinions about the current situation surrounding the SNCO course. MG Angelelli stressed the importance of full attendance of the course by the Iraqi students.

“The capability of the course is to prepare certain numbers of students, but nowadays there are few spare places. From our side I can assure our Iraqi counterparts that the NTM-I advisors are ready to support more Iraqi NCO's to conduct this very important Course”, he said.

The NTM-I DCOM expressed hope that the next SNCO Course, which is being planned, will to be conducted at the beginning of the next year with all it’s positions will be occupied by Iraqi students.

“Taking into account the importance of SNCO corps within the modern Armed Forces, we highly appreciate the NATO support in preparing and advising these Course instructors”, said Brig. Gen. Alaa.

He also added that despite of lack of electricity supply and internet connection, the course is running well and provides good results, in preparing Iraqi students.

After the initial meeting both Generals took a tour of the classrooms and training areas, during which time they observed the classes and the studying conditions.

The Senior NCO Course is a joint program designed to prepare and select NCO's and Sergeant majors for promotion to Chief Warrant Officer and higher. It is the most senior course that an enlisted soldier, sailor, or airman can take. The training is conducted by a small team of Training, Education and Advisory Division Officers. They both advise and assist the Iraqi staff and students in delivering and evolving the course. This training is currently conducted at the Regional Training Center in Taji at the Infantry NCO School.
