KUWAIT -- A renovated facility officially opened Aug. 26 will allow DLA Distribution Kuwait, Southwest Asia’s Bahrain detachment to better serve Navy customers in Bahrain.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony that day celebrated the opening of a newly renovated bay within the detachment’s warehouse operations division. Renovations included increased shelving and new cargo doors and bin storage systems and will allow the facility to store and distribute material quickly needed by the detachment’s nearly 130 supported commands and home-ported ships. These assets are currently en route from the main Kuwait distribution center to Bahrain to enable expedited distribution to local Navy customers.

“In order to ensure efficiency and timely delivery to key customers, Navy material previously located at the main Kuwait facility is being relocated to Bahrain,” Army Col. Vernon Beatty, commander of DLA Distribution Kuwait, Southwest Asia, said. “This will dramatically reduce customer wait time.”

The detachment, which was established under a transfer of functions from the Navy, operates a material processing center that serves as a sorting and staging area for material destined for Navy vessels. As shipments arrive at the center, the supplies are sorted by ship and staged according to their position on the ship.

“From the first materiel release order drop in June 2009 to today, this organization has prided itself on its customized delivery options and expedited shipments to the warfighter, and we are excited that the movement and storage of these assets in house will enable us to further provide added value to our customers,” said Marian Crosson, detachment director.

The Bahrain detachment’s mission is to maintain forward-positioned stock and provide distribution services to U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and Combined Maritime Forces operating in the 5th Fleet area of responsibility.

The facility is a detachment of DLA Distribution Kuwait, Southwest Asia. DLA Distribution Kuwait is DLA Distribution’s only distribution facility in Southwest Asia and was established based on a request from U.S. Central Command.
