SAN DIEGO – More than 200 service members from Southern California military installations gathered at Qualcomm Stadium to participate in the San Diego Chargers’ Military Appreciation Day Aug. 21.

The Chargers played against the Dallas Cowboys before a sold-out crowd for the preseason game. More than 50 Marines and sailors participated in a mass re-enlistment ceremony during the pregame show.

After service members unfurled a massive American flag across the entire field, three F/A-18 Hornets from Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 314, the “Black Knights,” Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, flew over the stadium while Sgt. Dewayne Meats, a training non-commissioned officer with Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting, sang the national anthem.

After the flyover, Maj. Gen. Thomas L. Conant, the commanding general of 3rd MAW and Rear Admiral William D. French, the commander of Navy Region Southwest, participated in the pregame coin toss.

Boxing undisputed middleweight champion and special guest Floyd Mayweather Jr. posed for a photo with Conant and Sgt. Maj. Don W. Gallagher, the 3rd MAW sergeant major, before they stepped off the field.

During halftime the 3rd MAW Band performed while marching onto the field. They arrived at the 50-yard line and were cheered on by the fans.

Members of the Wounded Warriors Battalion West received special recognition for their accomplishments during Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. The warriors stood in the spotlight and received a standing ovation before leaving the field, concluding the halftime show.

After the celebration, the players returned to the field for the second half. Service members remained at the stadium after the game to interact and take photos with the fans as a tribute to those who serve our country, the events highlighted the Chargers and their fans’ love for the military.
