    Story by Sgt. Christopher O'Quin

    13th Marine Expeditionary Unit

Sgt. Maj. Troy W. Dabney relinquished his post as battalion sergeant major of Battalion Landing Team 1/1,13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, to Sgt. Maj. Jonathan S. Henry, during a relief and appointment ceremony at Camp Horno, Aug. 11.

Henry comes to the battalion after a successful tour as company first sergeant of Headquarters and Service Company with the Assault Amphibious School Battalion.

During Dabney’s period of leadership, he helped lead his Marines and sailor through pre-deployment training and a deployment with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, in addition to many training exercises.

“It was the best time of my life, never been in a finer unit or around better Marines,” said Dabey. “They truly are the finest America has to offer. I think Sgt. Maj. Henry is a very capable man. I feel great to turn the battalion over to him. We’ve had plenty of turnover time, the transition should be seamless.”

A month prior to the post and relief, Henry stayed with the battalion as they conducted Exercise Mountain Warrior 06-10 at Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center Bridgeport, spending much time in the field.

“I know I am humbled beyond words to take a position as sergeant major of 1/1,” said Henry. “Training with these Marines out here at Mountain Warfare Training Center, humbling is not even an accurate word considering how hard these Marines have been training in the last five days. The battalion commander has let me walk with them. It’s a great way to meet the Marines, serve them chow and hike behind them, that’s what I like to do.”

Dabney will serve as the command sergeant major of 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, at Marine Corps Combat Training Center Twentynine Palms.

Henry will help lead the Marines of BLT 1/1 when they deploy next year with the 13th MEU. as warriors and ambassadors.
