Team Vandenberg held a groundbreaking ceremony at the construction site for a new Child Development Center here Aug. 18.

The $13 million, 23,390-square-foot facility will include infant, pre-toddler, toddler and pre-school rooms as well as kitchen, administrative, lobby and outdoor play areas.

"What we are doing today signifies not only an accomplishment but also a commitment--a continued commitment to the well-being of our Airmen and their families," said Col. Richard Boltz, 30th Space Wing commander. "This has been a team effort. The Army Corps of Engineers, the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment, 30th Space Wing Plans and Programs office, 30th Civil Engineer Squadron and the 30th Force Support Squadron have all worked long hours putting together the plans and proposals for this project."

The Army Corps of Engineers will begin construction in September 2010 and tentatively plan to have the project completed by October 2011.

"Today the Corps of Engineers continues its more than 50 years of partnership with Vandenberg Air Force Base contributing to the national defense mission with construction projects that improve the readiness and enhance the quality of life for Airmen and their families," said Army Col. Mark Toy, Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District commander. "We are very grateful to have played a role in this project and we are grateful for the chance to provide your children here at the base a great place to learn and play."

Construction of the new facility was certified under the Green Rating System at the silver level of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED. This rating means the new CDC facility project earned between 33 - 38 points of a possible 69 across six areas of examination. These areas included site sustainability, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design process. According to the U.S. Green Building Council Web site, the rating system encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.

While complying with 'green' standards, the new facility will also benefit the families, community and mission of Vandenberg.

"What a great federal investment--building a safe and healthy place for the children of the men and women who sacrifice so much for our great nation," said U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, who participated in the groundbreaking ceremony.

While the new facility is being built, Vandenberg's current CDC facility, which is next to the construction site, will remain operational.

The CDC is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The CDC's hours of operation are 6:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information about the CDC's programs and services, call 606-1555 or visit www.30svs.com/fsfc.html.
