FORT A.P. HILL, Va. – Service members from the Joint Task Force National Scout Jamboree conducted simulated exercises July 23 in advance of the 2010 National Scout Jamboree July 26-Aug. 4.
Personnel performed the scenarios, ranging from helicopter transports to protests and medical emergencies, to test contingency procedures in preparation for the tens of thousands of scouts, troop leaders and visitors expected to arrive here for the jamboree.
“These are the kind of things you have to rehearse,” said retired Navy Capt. Clifford Nancarrow, U.S. Northern Command standing joint force headquarters. “We bring together a lot of people from different places who may not work with one another directly. I think to go out, do a dry run and know what the terrain is like with the routes to and from different venues is very valuable. This is an important step in the preparation process.”
Nancarrow participated in the exercise kickoff by being one of the passengers on the two helicopters that dropped off passengers posing as distinguished visitors to the Merit Badge Midway.
“This was Army aviation at its finest,” Nancarrow said. “They got us safely aboard, and it was a very professional operation that went perfectly.”
After being dropped off at the plane’s landing, Nancarrow rode in an escort van to the Jamboree Arena where the 100th Anniversary show is scheduled to take place July 31.
On a separate flight from Nancarrow, Charlie Lane, Joint Multi-Agency Operations Coordination Center, said the pilots were also very professional and commented on how helpful they were in preparation for the Jamboree.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the kids,” Lane said. “The military presence really impresses the kids, and I know this is something they are going to remember for the rest of their lives.”
Apart from thousands of visitors and military expected to attend, Lane also said he looked forward to seeing one of his son’s at the Jamboree this year.
“If I see him, I’m going to ask him if he has earned any merit badges yet,” he said.
Since 1981, Fort A.P. Hill has served as the site of the National Scout Jamboree. This year’s Jamboree coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.
