MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Marines and sailors with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2 hosted a golf tournament to raise money for their squadron’s annual Marine Corps ball at the Sound of Freedom golf course, July 9.

“We are working on earning money so that the ticket prices for the ball will be lower for our junior Marines,” said Gunnery Sgt. Tri M. Tran, the aviation budget chief with MWHS-2.

According to Tran, after the green fees and other costs associated with the tournament were paid for the golf course gave a squadron discount allowing MWHS-2 to keep a certain percent of each green fee. The total money earned to help MWHS-2’s junior Marines was more than $1,500.

“I was a lance corporal once and money is tight at that pay grade,” said Cpl. Joshua Larnder, an aviation budget technician with MWHS-2. “When you have kids and a family at that rank this type of stuff the command is doing really helps.”

There were numerous people that participated in the tournament to include retired and active duty military and civilians of the surrounding area.

“We have more than ten lance corporals participating in this tournament to help themselves as well as their fellow junior Marines,” said Lt. Col. Thomas J. Witczak, the commanding officer of MWHS-2. “We greatly appreciate all of the people who came out here to help our Marines today.”

The event yielded several rewards for the Marines of MWHS-2 who participated. They not only worked together to raise funds for their upcoming Marine Corps Ball tickets, but also enjoyed a day of relaxation and camaraderie.

“Our command is helping out the junior Marines, and that is just awesome,” said Lance Cpl. Aric Honsey, a ground budget technician with MWHS-2. “Other than losing a few balls, today has been relaxing and really enjoyable. Knowing that my ball tickets are going to be that much cheaper because of a golf tournament just makes it even more fun to come out here.”
