Marines from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, I Marine Expeditionary Force joined the residents of Anaheim in paying respect to the nation's colors during their 15th annual Flag Day celebration, June 12.

The 13th MEU's Color Guard marched down Center Street Promenade bearing the national ensign and the Marine Corps flag to support the celebration as the city's adopted unit.

Sgt. Phillip L. Sayers served as the color sergeant, Cpl. Carlos Velazquez carried the Marine Corps flag and Lance Corporals Phillip M. Timmons and Brandon D. Avery served as the Color Guards during the celebration's parade and ceremony.

"Events like this make me feel proud to be a Marine," said Avery. "We get to show our colors, literally and it's enjoyable and encouraging to see this support too."

Flag Day's origins date back, to late 19th century when it is believed that a schoolteacher, BJ Cigrand, arranged for the students in the Fredonia Wis., Public School District Six to observe June 14 as Flag Birthday. June 14 is the anniversary of the nation's official adoption of the Stars and Stripes.

Former President Woodrow Wilson officially established Flag Day by proclamation May 30, 1916. On Aug. 3, 1949 former President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14 of each year as National Flag Day.

Anaheim's Flag Day celebration began 15 years ago by a couple whose goal was to inspire future generations to show respect for the nation's colors just as previous generations have.

"When [my husband and I] would go to public events we would see people who wouldn't know whether to stand up or sit down, put their hat on or off and I realized that we lost a whole generation or two of teaching the customs," said Sally Feldhaus, chairwoman of the Flag Day Committee and one of its founders. "We started this so we could start teaching our young people again to respect the flag."

Marines from the 13th MEU's Color Guard will again join the city of Anaheim in celebrating the birth of the nation during their annual Independence Day parade, July 3.

"It's good to see the Marine Corps Color Guard anytime," said Frank Feldhaus, the parade's grand marshall and a former Marine. "Because of the sacrifices made by service members we have a nation to honor the colors."
