NANGARHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan– The 1st Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division assumed responsibility for Afghanistan's Nangarhar Province on June 20 relieving the 4th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division of Fort Carson, Colo.
The transfer of authority ceremony occurred at Forward Operating Base Finley Shields in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. This event was attended by several senior Afghan military leaders including, Gen. Salangi, Chief of Police, Gen. Saboor, Chief of the National Defense Service, Gen. Zaman, Afghan Border Police commander, Gen. Adsvol, 2-201st BDE Commander (Afghan National Army).
The ceremony included an uncasing of the Battalion's colors by Lt. Col. James Sisemore, commander of the 1st STB, and Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Guglielmo, the command sergeant major of the 1st STB, symbolizing the unit's readiness, and responsibility over the Area of Operations.
Soldiers from the 1st STB have trained for the past year at Fort Campbell, Ky., in preparation for the deployment. During Sisemore's first address to several leaders in Nangarhar, he stated the Soldiers of Task Force Spartan are ready to assume the mission at hand.
"We will work hand in hand with our Afghan partners to defeat the miscreant forces within the Nangarhar Province and return Afghanistan to his former greatness," said Sisemore of his plan to work with the Afghanistan National Security Forces.
