FORWARD OPERATING BASE, Afghanistan -- U.S. Navy medics from the Farah Forward Surgical Team and Provincial Reconstruction Team Farah treated four Afghan national army soldiers who were injured from an improvised explosive device at Forward Operating Base Farah, April 23.

The IED explosion occurred in Najabad, a village in the Pusht Rod district in Farah Province. One soldier was dead on scene and another soldier succumbed to injuries while being treated at FOB Farah. The three other soldiers were treated and stabilized by the Navy medics, two of which will be transferred to the local ANA brigade medical facility. The third soldier will be transported to Herat where further medical treatment will be conducted.

Medical treatment at FOB Farah continues to be a vital focal point between battlefield treatment and advanced medical procedures. Many times battlefield treatment will not be sustainable through transportation to Herat. The medics at FOB Farah enhance the treatments received in the field, allowing them to be successfully transported for further advanced treatment.

"Our job is to take the treatments [from the battlefield] and make it more permanent," said U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Benjamin Hodges, senior enlisted leader, Farah FST, "We stabilized them to the best of our abilities before we transport them to conventional care. Once we get them to the point where they are stable enough for flight, we will push them out."
