FORT DEVENS-Mass. -- Sgt. Maj. Thomas S. Gills, the Deputy Chief of Staff Personnel G—1 Sergeant Major joined the ranks of many other VIPs when he arrived here to observe Silver Scimitar 2010 on March 31. Silver Scimitar is the U.S. Army Reserve Command level multi-component human resources training exercise designed to prepare units to conduct HR missions within the every theater of operations.

Gills toured classes that were wrapping up, and attended the exercise after action review to compile information for his colleagues in Washington.

"I came here to observe the training, and understood this was annual training for Soldiers," said Gills. "What I didn't understand, was the in depth training, and the positive impact on officers and noncommissioned officers."

Gills noted the leader's and planner's enthusiasm while he was visiting.

The subject matter experts came together and briefed with excitement, which provided a golden opportunity for NCOs to do the same, said Gills.

"The NCOs have the energy to be dedicated professionals," Gills said "the SMEs set the example."
Gills said he would like to see some changes in the future.

"I want more visibility to the S-1 and G-1 and hopefully we'll send more personnel in the future," he said.
