    Story by Sgt. Alex Romey

    1st Cavalry Division

Troopers from the 1st Cavalry Division Sustainment Brigade participated in the 2nd Annual 42K Jackie Robinson Ruck March, held in Austin, Texas, on April 14 and 15 to honor the resiliency, determination, and barrier-breaking that Jackie Robinson did in his lifetime.
Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play in the MLB, is a symbol of personal courage and sacrifice for the greater good. His values of standing up against adversity and paving the way for equal opportunities resonate deeply with the U.S. Army, fostering a strong sense of unity and shared purpose.
Sgt. Arouna Sangare, a participant in the challenging 42K march, found a profound connection with Jackie Robinson's journey. He saw his own challenges mirrored in Robinson's, and this personal connection underscored the importance of perseverance in the face of obstacles, a value deeply ingrained in the U.S. Army. This shared journey of resilience and determination, inspired by Robinson's legacy, is what makes the Troopers' participation in the ruck march so powerful.
The 1CDSB embodied its Brigade motto, 'Standards and Discipline,' as everyone embraced leadership during the march. Troopers were not just tested on their mental fortitude and physical endurance, but also on their ability to work as a team. They shared their journey of resilience and determination, reflecting on equality and inclusion in America and U.S. Army. This display of leadership and teamwork is a testament to the strength and unity of the 1CDSB.
The temporary discomfort experienced during the ruck march was a mere fraction of the challenges endured by Jackie Robinson, said Capt. Luke Smith. Smith, who had the opportunity to interact with J.C. Hartman, the first African American player signed by the Houston Astros, took Hartman's advice, 'Do the right thing,' to heart. He emphasized the Army's crucial role in providing a solid framework for life, a foundation built on the practice of the Army Values, hard work, and the ability to interact with others positively. This framework offers a sense of security and stability, which is invaluable in the face of challenges.
One of Jackie Robinson's profound quotes, "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives," resonated Lt. Col. DeShaunda Allen, the Deputy Commander of 1CDSB. Her Troopers felt motivated to keep up and persevere through the ruck as she led the formation by setting the pace and maintaining unity. During designated resting points, she recognized the hardships everyone on her team felt, which helped her overcome any mental or physical obstacles.
This sense of unity and camaraderie makes the Army community solid and resilient. 1st Cavalry Division Troopers strive for excellence, collectively building each other up to be the "First Team" of Teams.
