As the "Ivy "Division settles in at its new home on Fort Carson the relocation of the 4th Infantry Division museum is well underway.

The M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank and the M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle that once rested near the division headquarters building now sit outside the main gate of the "Best Hometown in the Army."

The pieces were hauled approximately 843 miles from Fort Hood to Fort Carson July 24 and arrived July 25, said Maj. Michael Mowes deputy of the division civil affairs.

The vehicles are an apparent sign that the 4th Infantry Division has stood-up at its new home on Fort Carson, said Mowes.

On July 29, 13 vehicles and two helicopters were hauled up to Fort Carson and downloaded into their temporary resting place at the 1st Brigade 4th Infantry Divisions' motor pool outside of the museum storage area.

The vehicles are from the WWI, WWII, Vietnam, Korea and present day eras said, Major Will Arnold, the division transportation officer for the division who has been working on this mission since April.

Arnold said that the move was contracted at about $70,000 - 80,000.

The vehicle move was fun and challenging said Chief Warrant Officer, Sean Lockwood the divisions' mobility warrant. Up front it looks complicated but it isn't really, he said.

The biggest issue was coordinating with the truck drivers and making sure they arrived on time.

Lockwood who has been tasked with this mission for six months said that the move went faster than expected.

The museum artifacts are slated to be packed and moved throughout the month of August said Steve Ruhnke, 4th Infantry Division museum curator.

The ground breaking for the temporary museum is slated for the middle of August he added.

Ruhnke said that the temporary building will be outside of the main gate adjacent to the vehicle registration building and will be the museums home for about two years.

The museum is slated to open in the spring of 2010 said Ruhnke.
