FORT CARSON, Colo. — The American country music band Lonestar provided musical entertainment for the 2nd Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, and their Families, as the battalion celebrated its homecoming ball Oct. 29 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Colorado Springs.

The band playing the night away capped off a ball rich with tradition and ceremony as the "Lonestar" Battalion celebrated its return after a 12-month deployment to Iraq.

Lt. Col. Leo Caballero, commander, 2nd STB, 2nd BCT, 4th Inf. Div., said the award-winning band from Nashville, Tenn., has a unique history with the unit that shares the same name.

"Lonestar has kept in touch with us during our deployment and celebrated with us upon our last return at Fort Hood. We are truly grateful for their continued support and friendship over the years," he said.

Caballero presented the country quartet with a flag that was flown in their honor over the battalion headquarters in Iraq and a battalion yearbook, covering the unit's time deployed.

"We really appreciate the friendship with the Soldiers and are thankful for the opportunity to play for you guys again," said Dean Sams, Lonestar keyboardist.

The ball included a punch bowl ceremony, an awards ceremony for the battalion's Family Readiness Group leaders, and a short speech by the battalion commander.

"It's been a privilege and an honor to be the commander of such a fine group of professionals for the past 12 months," Caballero said.

For some of the Soldiers, it was their first time at a military ball, enjoying the opportunity to wear their dress uniforms at a festive event and spend time with their fellow Soldiers and families.

"The food was great, the music was phenomenal, and they really made us feel like family," said Spc. Amirah L. Smith, a multichannel transmission systems operator assigned to Company B, 2nd STB, 2nd BCT.

"It was great how everyone joined together to celebrate our return from overseas, and the night was full of emotion and fun," added Smith, who hails from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
