MANAMA, Bahrain - Two members of a Congressional delegation met with Sailors stationed at Naval Support Activity Bahrain and aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS John Paul, Aug. 26.

Rep. Madeleine Bordallo (D-Guam) and Rep. James McGovern (D-Massachusetts) thanked Sailors for their service and also got a first hand assessment of Sailors needs and concerns.

"I'm in awe of the men and women in our armed forces," said McGovern. "They do an incredible job. They protect our country and make great sacrifices of themselves and their families. We wanted to come out here and say thank you. I want them to know how grateful members of Congress and the American people are for their service."

McGovern also said that he was thrilled to meet several Sailors who reside in Massachusetts.

Petty Officer 1st Class Dwain Fernandez, master-at-arms, was one of the Sailors stationed at Bahrain who had the opportunity to have lunch with the Congressional delegation. He said the visit gave him the chance to talk with Rep. Bordallo about issues concerning not only Guam, but also the Navy.

"This visit is important because it gives our elected representatives the chance to meet with forward deployed Sailors and see how we serve our nation proudly," said Fernandez. "I think it also helps our elected leaders make informed decisions about legislation that affects the troops."

Bordallo and McGovern are traveling throughout the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility to meet with service members and military leaders.
