Elections Run Smoothly in Eastern Afghanistan Thanks to Afghan National Security Forces Sgt. Matthew Thompson

An Afghan national police officer points out the direction of recent rocket attacks for 2nd Lt. Dan Jendrich, the personal security detail platoon leader with 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 10th Mountain Division, Aug. 20. International Security Assistance Forces assisted Afghan national security forces during the elections by providing a quick reaction force.

NURISTAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan — Afghan citizens, along with Afghan national policemen, defended polling sites and election materials from insurgent attacks during the run-up to the national election, Aug. 17.

Several Afghan civilians aided the ANP in returning fire when approximately seven insurgents attacked the local polling site in the Kowlak village of Dow Ab District. The insurgents dispersed and ran away from the scene, leaving the ballots and polling site unharmed.
