NURISTAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan — Afghan citizens, along with Afghan national policemen, defended polling sites and election materials from insurgent attacks during the run-up to the national election, Aug. 17.
Several Afghan civilians aided the ANP in returning fire when approximately seven insurgents attacked the local polling site in the Kowlak village of Dow Ab District. The insurgents dispersed and ran away from the scene, leaving the ballots and polling site unharmed.
