CAMP ATTERBURY JOINT MANEUVER TRAINING CENTER, Ind. — Three Soldiers here were honored in a ceremony as part of Camp Atterbury leadership's support of "The Year of the Non-commissioned Officer," an Army program created to highlight outstanding enlisted Soldiers.
Sgt. Maj. Michael A. Johnson, the mobility NCO from the Installation Support Unit, Staff Sgt. Veronica Leak-Percell, the housing NCO from the Installation Support Unit, and Staff Sgt. Jeffrey D. Vickous, administrative NCO for the Military Police, all were awarded "Non-commissioned Offer of the Month," for the Year of the NCO program. The ceremony was held at the museum here in late May.
"The Soldiers distinguished themselves in their field and are getting recognition for the outstanding work they are doing," said Sgt. Maj. Rodney A. Spade, the post command sergeant major. Each NCO of the month winner will receive a coin, have his or her picture framed and displayed in the museum, and also have an engraved Camp Atterbury brick placed in the walkway at the memorial.
All three of the Soldiers were surprised they had one such an award.
Johnson said he felt honored.
"I feel as a sergeant major, that's my job — to take care of Soldiers..." he said.
Leak-Percell said she too was appreciative.
"I was surprised, and yes I am honored, because my daily tasks are being recognized," she said.
Vickous explained what the award meant to him.
"It means that if you really go out of your way to take care of Soldiers, some how some way it will be noticed," he said. "It may not be immediately, but somehow some way you will get noticed. For me, I was honored because I have been putting in a lot of time and effort here," he said.
The post command sergeant major said the ceremony was great way to recognize the troops' achievements.
Spade selected the winners himself, but it was the Soldiers' directors who nominated them for the award.
"We are planning to recognize the NCO that has done a great job each month by having NCO packets sent to me each month highlighting their accomplishments," he said.
Spade said he intends to award three NCOs every month for the rest of 2009.
