CAMP VICTORY, Iraq -- The Multi-National Corps - Iraq Judge Advocate General's office honored a fallen Soldier by holding the first Sgt. Maj. Gilmore Soldier of Excellence Board Oct. 4-5 at the Camp Victory Courthouse.

The board was created to recognize outstanding paralegals currently deployed to Iraq that uphold the high standards Gilmore set for his Soldiers, said Sgt. Maj. Michael Broady, XVIII Airborne Corps Staff Judge Advocate sergeant major.

The board spanned two days of intensive questions, which included topics such as Sgt. Maj. Gilmore history, U.S. Army history, legal administration and military justice.

The review board was comprised of five noncommissioned officers from the rank of staff sergeant to master sergeant.

The winner of the board was Sgt. Richard Goldstein, 42nd Infantry Division Staff Judge Advocate's Office, Tikrit, Iraq.

"It feels good to be the winner of the first Sgt. Maj. Gilmore Board. Sgt. Maj. Gilmore looked out for his people; he was a good leader. He led by example, and he's somebody who really cared about people. Living up to his legacy is a daunting task, but I'll do my best to do it." Goldstein said.

Gilmore's helicopter was shot down Nov. 7, 2003, while he was visiting Soldiers in Iraq.

"As a leader, Sgt. Maj. Gilmore worked tirelessly to ensure Soldiers were trained and competent in their combat warrior and paralegal skills," said Broady. "Mostly, he wanted his Soldiers to thrive in a feeling of self-worth and value in the JAG Corps and the greater Army.

This board is dedicated to Sgt. Maj. Gilmore's vision, personal courage, pursuit of paralegal excellence and love for soldiering."

Next year the board will be held at Fort Bragg, N.C., and will be open to all paralegals in the Army, said Broady.
