    Sailors Participate in Fast-Roping Exercises

    PHOENIX EXPRESS Exercise

    Members of exercise Phoenix Express participated in fast-roping exercises from a Greek SH-60 Seahawk helicopter and a MH-60 Seahawk helicopter assigned to the USS Mt Whitney here April 30.

    "This is something we do often, so performing these types of drills is very important," said Turkish Cmdr. Turhan Ecevit. "Seeing the differences between militaries and how we each conduct helicopter exercises is also something I have enjoyed and found to be helpful."

    Throughout the day 93 participants from United States, Spain, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia performed hovering and fast-roping movements.

    "This exercise is an excellent way to help all the countries involved learn from each other as well as learn to work together," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Marcus Monreal, attached to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 28.

    The countries were broken up into small teams anywhere from five to nine persons and each team repeated the hovering and fast-rope exercise four times each.

    According to Monreal this type of exercise is an opportunity for the participants to show their capabilities as well as practice. "It is important for us to stay proficient at visit board search and seizure techniques, so having to opportunity to show others our capabilities while refreshing our skills is a great opportunity," said Monreal.

    Combined North Atlantic Treaty Organization and Mediterranean partners plan to wrap up the in-port multi-lateral training portion of PE09 May 1 and begin the at-sea portion May 4.
