KABUL, Afghanistan — One insurgent was killed and six suspects were detained during an operation by Afghan and coalition forces in Konar province, April 22.
In Pech (Darreh-ye Pich) District, approximately 85 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad, the combined force conducted a search of two compounds to remove a key enabler of the al-Qaida foreign facilitation network in Konar province.
Afghan and coalition forces conducted a thorough search of one compound without incident, protecting 20 adults and children. At an adjacent compound, forces carried out a deliberate search after Afghan forces called for all non-combatants to exit the buildings. More than 40 adults and children cooperated with the Afghan forces' instructions and were protected.
One man who was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle disregarded all appeals to surrender and was killed when he threatened the force. A total of six men were detained for suspected ties to al-Qaida.
