Soldiers from the 643rd Engineer Company, 84th Engineer Battalion, took time out of their busy day to conduct a re-enlistment ceremony for one of their own, on April 4.
Spc. William Roberts, 22, of Sacramento, Calif., is currently serving as a carpenter for the Army, but as part of the phasing out of carpentry jobs, was given the opportunity to re-enlist while in Iraq, selecting a new military occupational specialty.
Roberts' re-enlistment was held on a job site at Command Post-North. He requested to have his company commander, Capt. Kevin Arnett, 29, of Redding, Calif., read the oath-of-office to him.
"It was a privilege to me that one of my Soldiers asked me to do their re-enlistment," said Arnett. "Roberts is a good guy and a great Soldier."
The flag, displayed in front of a sunset mural, that was used for the ceremony, was held by Spc. Sean Garner, 19, and Sgt. Roshand Burkett, 29, both of the 84th Engineer Battalion.
"It was great to have my best friend [Garner] and my squad leader [Burkett] holding the flag for me," stated Roberts.
Roberts was two years into his initial contract of four years with the Army and chose to re-enlist for six more years of service.
Following the ceremony, Roberts was congratulated by his fellow Soldiers, the command staff for the 84th Engineer Battalion here, and Brig. Gen. Robert Brown, the Deputy Commanding General (Support) Multi-National Division-North.
Robert added that he wasn't expecting Brown to show up for his re-enlistment, but that it made it that much better to have had him there and to receive a coin from him.
