JOMTIEN, Thailand – While deployed in support of Exercise Cobra Gold 2009, Marines and Sailors enjoyed a Super Bowl party hosted by Marine Corps Community Services Feb. 2.

Cobra Gold is a joint, combined multinational exercise focused on maintaining and improving military interoperability among its participants.

The event was planed and organized by MCCS and gave more than 368 deployed Marines and Sailors a chance to enjoy Super Bowl XLIII all the way from Thailand.

"While deployed, Marines don't have many entertainment options. So we like to provide them with opportunities like this event whenever we can," said Richard E. Poulin Jr., the MCCS Deployed Exercise Support program manager.

The Super Bowl party began at 5:30 a.m., and the kickoff for the game commenced at 6:18 a.m. The technical setup included seven flat screen televisions and two theater screen projectors.

During the game's breaks in action, MCCS gave away several different quality prizes that included iPods, a Play Station 3 and even a laptop computer. Free pizza, soda and popcorn were also provided for those in attendance.

"I heard that we would get to watch the Super Bowl," said Sgt. Darell Garner, with Marine All Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 242. "I was pleasantly surprised [by] the huge projector screens, as well as the free food and drinks."

Brig. Gen. Ronald Bailey, commanding general of 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade and deputy commanding general of III Marine Expeditionary Force, was in attendance at the Super Bowl party and helped give away some of the prizes.

This event was just one of the many services that MCCS has planned for this year's Exercise Cobra Gold. Other activities coordinated by MCCS include a Cobra Gold Golf Tournament, Call of Duty VI video game tournament and ping-pong tournament, just to mention a few.

MCCS also provide many services to deployed Marines, such as Internet access, video games, movies and a mini-exchange.

While the Super Bowl might have been the biggest event, MCCS will be providing Marines and Sailors with the opportunity to participate in many more throughout the exercise.
