NEW YORK - Sailors and Coast Guardsmen were promoted and reenlisted during a joint ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City during 2017 Fleet Week New York (FWNY), May 25.
Adm. Chris Grady, commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command welcomed those gathered and thanked the families in attendance.
“You fulfill a vital role in our Navy and your sacrifices do not go unnoticed,” he said. “Family readiness directly contributes to our operational readiness.“
Adm. Grady administered the oath of reenlistment and oath of office for the service members as they stood on the sacred site.
“Traditionally, reenlistments or promotions take place in locations having symbolic meaning to the service member,” said Grady. “Sometimes it’s aboard a ship or submarine, at 35,000 feet in a combat zone, or at a naval monument it is often reflective of the Navy’s core values of honor, courage and commitment.”
Lt. j.g. Patrick O’Shaughnessy assigned to USS Mitscher (DDG 57) was honored to be promoted.
“It was truly an honor to be promoted in a place that made me want to serve in the first place,” said O’Shaughnessy. “Promotions are always great but being able to say I was promoted at the 9/11 Memorial is truly amazing.”
To those re-enlisting and being promoted, Grady urged them to share their pride.
“As you take this oath today and move about the city this weekend, stand proud,” he said. “ Talk about your service, talk about your families and what it means to serve, to volunteer. Share that pride.”
FWNY, now in its 30th year, is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services. It is an unparalleled opportunity for the citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services. The weeklong celebration has been held nearly every year since 1984.
