CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – Marines with 1st Maintenance Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group conducted a forward operating base training exercise throughout February 2018. A forward operating base is a secured military position used to support tactical operations. They can also contain multiple facilities designed to withstand harsh conditions.
The purpose of the exercise was to enhance combat readiness and proficiency while in a field environment, where the unit would be working off limited resources. Unit cohesion is a crucial factor in the exercise as Marines adapt to their environment to complete the mission.
“We work through challenges we don’t necessarily expect,” said Maj. Jason Schneider, Executive Officer, 1st Maintenance Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, “Marines are expected to be able to complete all tasks they would do in garrison but in a field environment, including sending out convoys to obtain food and water. They retrieve their water from Las Pulgas Lake and purify it.”
1st Marine Logistics Group is soon to be designated as the supply maintenance battalion lead. This will be a conglomerate of maintenance battalion, and supply battalion merged to support Marine Corps operations overseas.
“My favorite part of the field is getting out of the shop and seeing all the shops in the company working together,” said Sgt. Preston Burkhardt, metrology technician, 1st Maintenance Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group. Burkhardt works in the calibration lab which ensures that all equipment meets the standards and accuracy specified by the manufacturer.
