Story by Petty Officer 3rd Class Tristan Lotz

USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77)

Hello again, shipmates! MC3 Lotz here once again to bring you another review of our ship’s latest menu review board. The review board, held 15 August, was a competition between aft galley, forward galley and flag mess in the creation of the ultimate nacho dip. Truly, it was “nacho average” day in supply department!

The first dip I dabbed was prepared by the good people of the flag mess galley. It was a pleasant orange color, with chunks of chicken prominent in the mix. Its taste had a distinct zing to it, and a sweet and sour flavor that gave it an almost Asian twist. I would describe it as “Mexico meets China.”

The dip put together by the Sailors of the aft galley was thin on sauce, but heavy on corn and beans, and had a slight hint of mint on the very edge of the flavor. Though delicious, this was less of a dip and more of a bean salad.

Our friends up forward put together a classic-style, slightly spicy, full-on Latin dip that was a bright, exuberant orange and had just the right balance of spice and flavor to bring the tactile symphony into perfect and utter harmony.

And finally, I had the pleasure of tasting a dip prepared by CS1 Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald truly exemplified the concept of chip ‘dip’ with this tasty work. It was like warm sour cream with flecks of green onion, truly giving it that archetypical ‘chip and dip’ taste, which invokes memories of watching football at my friend’s house on Thanksgiving.

In conclusion, I say that the aft and forward’s dips work best together, complementing each other. Flag’s fine dip gives an excellent Asiatic twist to any party, and CS1 Fitzgerald’s dip is poised to be the next Superbowl must-have. GHWB’s food service divisions hold menu review boards on bay two of the aft mess decks once a month, typically on the 15th, and all hands are invited to attend and sample the food.
