FORWARD OPERATING BASE DELTA, Iraq – The Borlaug Institute of Texas A & M University Agricultural Team spent the afternoon getting an aerial recon of Wasit province, Sept. 6, 2008.
The team is evaluating the agricultural conditions, which is a complicated task.
"The whole thing is a system – we look at the whole thing and if one variable changes in the system, it could change the outcome," said Dr. Glen Shinn, Team Borlaug deputy team leader, on how they assess the agricultural situation in Wasit.
"By viewing the province from the air, it gives us the gestalt – the whole flavor of the province," said Shinn. "You can see so much about the infrastructure from the air. The general condition of land, access to water and land use."
The members of Team Borlaug each focus on different specialties, and together they give the 41st Fires Brigade leadership and the Iraqis an assessment. The goal is to maximize the resources available and suggest improvements to existing systems.
"One of the issues we got a better picture of today was the water distribution system," Shinn said. "We could see what kind of electricity, pumping capacity and canal infrastructure that is in place."
Shinn's initial impression of the province during their first week is a positive one.
"Wasit has the potential for real agricultural growth," Shinn said. "There is really good land and with the right resources, the potential for quality looks really good."
Team Borlaug is scheduled to continue assessing Wasit province throughout the month of September.
