Hope tour kicks off with friendly soccer match

FORWARD OPERATING BASE KALSU, Iraq – The Hope Tour 2008 kicked off with a friendly game of soccer in Najaf, Iraq Aug. 1, 2008.
Soldiers from the 30th Iraqi Army Brigade took on the 30th Military Transition Team, Ugandan guard force on Forward Operating Base Endeavor, Najaf Provincial Reconstruction Team and Team Borlaug from Texas A&M.
Soldiers from the 30th IA Bde. won five to one and received England soccer jerseys. Members of the FOB Endeavor soccer team received "Hope Tour 2008: I'm on Team Najaf" t-shirts.
The Hope Tour 2008 Iraq is a U.S. Embassy-funded project that aims to develop young Iraqi minds, said Evan McCarthy, Najaf PRT.
The program uses soccer to provide a platform for civil society education and national youth reconciliation.
Phase one of Hope Tour uses soccer to reach out to youth in Najaf, Baghdad and Kirkuk, forging relationships and distributing soccer balls and jerseys.
Phase two will establish soccer clinics with the dual purpose of raising athletic skills and organizing group activities to unite neighborhoods.
