NANGARHAR, Afghanistan – Three U.S. senators visited Forward Operating Base Fenty in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, on, July 19, as part of a tour of combat zones in Afghanistan and the Middle East.

Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) visited Jalalabad and talked with Soldiers. The delegation also received a series of operational and developmental briefings that focused on the current situation in northeastern Afghanistan.

"It was a pleasure for us to host the Congressional Delegation today," Col. Charles Preysler, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team commander, said. "They came to visit the troops and learn about our area of operation. We talked to them about our mission, how the troops are doing and some of the many ways that we are working with the Afghan national security forces and government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to bring increased security and development to the area. The delegation was pleased to meet Soldiers from each of their home states and hear about the tremendous success that they, and the rest of the brigade has accomplished over the past 15 months in Afghanistan."

Soldiers from the senators' home states were equally excited to visit with the senators during the visit.

"I think it was really neat that Obama came over here," Staff Sgt. Tim Wells, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division supply sergeant. "Plus, the fact that he is from my home state and a presidential candidate added to the excitement."

The delegation also met with Gov. Gul Afha Sherzai, governor of the Nangarhar province, during their visit to discuss the positive effects of combined operations and development progress being made in the area.

The entire visit lasted about two hours before Soldiers walked the delegation to the airfield so they could continue their tour and visit with service members in other theaters of operation.
