MOSUL, Iraq— Iraqi army soldiers, acting on a citizen's tip, interrupted four suspected al-Qaida in Iraq terrorists constructing a car bomb near the al-Rissala neighborhood market in Mosul, March 9.
The four bomb makers fled and were not apprehended.
Citizens were evacuated from the market as a precaution by the IA. The IA and coalition forces conducted a search of the market area which revealed four anti-armor Improvised Explosive Devices hidden in a popcorn cart. The anti-armor IEDs, crude homemade explosively formed penentrators, were removed from the market by CF Explosive Ordnance Disposal and taken to Foward Operating Base Marez for destruction.
"When normal citizens take an active role in the safety of their neighborhood, these are the kind of results that can be achieved." said Capt. William Nance, company commander of Heavy Company, 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, "The IA was quick to respond to the call and stopped a crime against the people of Mosul before it could happen. Teamwork between the Iraqi citizens, the IA and CF took those bombs off the street."
