College fair prepares Lejeune students for success

Marine Corps Installations East       

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Educators and various college representatives visited Lejeune High School to set students up for success during a college and career fair aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Jan. 26.

Students had the opportunity to take part in determining their future by speaking with schools from across North Carolina and out of state.

Attendees learned valuable information, such as how to plan, apply and pay for college.

“My son and I attended the college fair to see what the different schools had to offer,” said Gunnery Sgt. Kelvin Scott, company gunnery sergeant of Landing Support Company, 2nd Transportation Support Battalion, and Washington, D.C., native. “I wanted to show my son that you have to ask for what you want and not to settle for anything less.”

Scott’s son, Alejandro, plans to earn degree in business law when he attends college.

“College helps students by advancing their education,” said Eric Steimel, LHS principal and Jacksonville, native. “If you’re going to encourage students to go to college, you need to get some good options for them to see the different programs and opportunities available; this is key.”

A new addition to the college fair was the parent panels, where parents had the chance to ask other parents with students already attending college questions covering subjects such as campus safety and transferring GI Bill benefits.

“LHS students have parents from across the U.S. who may not be familiar with the college process,” said Julie Fulton, Camp Lejeune school liaison. “It’s nice to have people you can ask.”

Unit commanders, senior leaders and staff noncommissioned officers also attended the college fair as well, to share information with their Marines.
