Story by Staff Sgt. Teresa Gallagher

    Joint Base Langley-Eustis

FORT EUSTIS, Va. - U.S. Army and Air Force first sergeants across Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, are currently working to create the first Diamond Council at Fort Eustis, an organization for first sergeants of every branch of service across the installation to easily connect with one another.

First sergeants came up with the idea when they realized there was a missing link among diamond wearing noncommissioned officers in the units.

“We knew we wanted to positively affect professional development, morale and esprit de corps across the installation,” said U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Ernest Evans, Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 210th Aviation Regiment, 128th Aviation Brigade first sergeant. “We are the top echelon of support within our companies, so we have to lead from the top and show our support for our troops in every way possible.”

To better prepare themselves to serve their Soldiers, the Fort Eustis first sergeants met with the Langley First Sergeants’ Council, a common council on Air Force installations, for advice on creating a council similar to their own. They attended a meeting at Langley to see how they can organize their council and used their charter and bylaws as a template to create their own.

“I was really impressed with the professionalism and tradition behind [the Langley First Sergeant’s Council],” said Evans. “They helped guide us in the right direction to accomplish what we want, and they even gave us a check to get us started.”

Once they established their goals, they met with Sgt. Maj. James Jackson, 733rd Mission Support Group command sergeant major, to discuss their plans.

“I think it’s a great idea because it’s another venue that I can use to reach out to first sergeants,” said Jackson. “They have the biggest influence in their unit, they see the Soldiers day in and day out and they can help ensure that everyone on the installation is working to reach their fullest potential.”

Pending legal approval of their charter and bylaws, the Diamond Council at Fort Eustis will accept first sergeants from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces on the installation. Their first event to kick off the council will be a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, Feb 27-28.
