CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - Leaders from The Basic School met with instructors from military occupational specialty schools for their annual institutional effectiveness visit at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Jan. 21.

The Basic School is a training institution that prepares new Marine Corps officers to operate as leaders within the structure of the Fleet Marine Force.

“The goal of the meeting was for TBS to properly assess the quality of lieutenants who have come through our courses,” said Maj. William Grimball, the officer in charge for Light Armored Vehicle Training Company, School Of Infantry-West. “It’s a chance for TBS to reach out to the operating forces and to gain an understanding of how their lieutenants perform in the fleet.”

During the meeting, the visiting officers sat down with instructors and discussed how well the lieutenants arriving at their school are handling their new responsibilities.

“They always produce good lieutenants who are tactically competent, good ethics and leadership, physically fit, and ready to do their jobs,” said Grimball. “This is a way of making sure that when we receive these lieutenants they are still that high quality.”

By getting feedback from Marines who see the new lieutenants in action as they apply their training, TBS can ensure that what they teach is really what the young officers need to know.

“It’s reassuring to us having TBS come out and do that quality check right here where we interact and work with the students,” said Grimball.

While there is always room for improvement, Grimball emphasized his faith in the existing system and warned against drastic changes.

“The original formula of The Basic School works,” said Grimball. “You can take the original formula and enhance it or stress certain things, but the Marine Corps has been creating phenomenal lieutenants and officers since the very beginning.”

As the Marine Corps adapts to match the constantly evolving global environment, the training to prepare young Marines has to change with it for the force to stay effective.

“The muscles you train are the muscles that grow,” said Lieutenant Col. Dane Hanson, the warfighting director for TBS. “Where we emphasize our training is where the lieutenants are going to get better, and we have to make sure we have the right balance for a young officer going into the Marine Air Ground Task Force.”

The focus of the Marine Corps is to be prepared to respond to any emergency situation, whenever and wherever it arises. This preparation starts at the very first level of training for all Marines.

“The stronger the foundation of the younger leaders, the better the future of the Marine Corps will be,” said Hanson. “With the emphasis on making sure the young leaders are well prepared, well trained, and they can make sound decisions in a complex environment, the Marine Corps will be in good hands.”
